How to Extend the Life of Your Epoxy Garage Floor

Michigan’s weather, ranging from hot summers to freezing winters, demands an epoxy garage floor that’s both durable and easy to maintain. You’re in luck! Epoxy and polyaspartic coating systems (the garage floors we install) are ideal for this environment, providing a combination of aesthetics and functionality that few other flooring options can match. Here’s how to keep your epoxy garage floor looking its best and lasting as long as possible:

What You Need

For day-to-day maintenance, you’ll need a sturdy broom to sweep away loose dirt and debris. A bucket with a wringer and a reliable string mop will help you tackle more thorough cleaning tasks. Investing in a leaf blower can be a game-changer as well — it just blasts everything off the floor, doing what leaf blowers do best.

Check out Wash & Wax automotive detergent for the cleaning product itself. Not only does it clean, but it also gives your floor a “just-installed” shine. Mix this detergent with water in the bucket to create an effective cleaning solution.

A microfiber dust mop is also highly recommended. It picks up fine dust and dirt that a regular broom might miss.

One thing to avoid: Don’t use regular household detergents, as they tend to leave behind a soapy residue that can attract dirt and dull the floor’s finish over time.

The Cleaning Process

Start by using a broom or leaf blower to remove any loose dirt, dust, and debris from the surface. This is what prevents scratching and scuffing when you begin mopping.

In a bucket, mix 1 ounce of Wash & Wax automotive detergent per gallon of warm water. Immerse your string mop in the solution, wring it out well to avoid excess water, and begin mopping the floor. Make sure to cover the entire surface, paying special attention to any stubborn spots. Remember: This isn’t just about how it looks (though it will look great too), it’s also about the health and longevity of your floor. Clean the whole thing!

After mopping, you can let the floor air dry. However, using a microfiber dust mop to dry the floor will prevent slips and ensure that no water spots are left behind. For outdoor spaces like driveways and patios, simply hose down the surface to wash away dirt and grime. Then, use a foam squeegee to remove the excess water quickly, leaving your surface clean and dry.

And that’s it! It’s simple, easy, and will provide a longevity you wouldn’t believe.
